2011 Chevrolet Volt: Electric versatility

The Chevrolet Volt is the most advanced hybrid ever made. It's radical. Handsome. And no less than Automobile Magazine, Motor Trend, and the North American Car of the Year jury have crowned it "Car of the Year." But, uh, where can you buy one?

Since its December debut, Chevrolet has sold only 2,020 Volts in six states through April, including Connecticut and Washington, D.C. Massachusetts will get the honor this fall, and the entire country will be invited to buy in December. While Chevy can fill every Hertz lot in America with Impalas, they're barely making 10,000 Volts this year.

That's because this plug-in hybrid has a battery with 12 times the capacity of a Prius, and until now, no one's produced such a complex and large lithium-ion pack in high volume. Unlike a regular hybrid, where the electric motor provides a small assist to the gas engine, the Volt's electric motor is the primary source of power. The gas engine is secondary and spins the electric motor when the battery dies (and at higher speeds, it can power the wheels in tandem).

In short, the Volt is designed to be plugged in like a pure electric car, but it'll run all day and all week like a gasoline car. Anything else about the Volt's powertrain labyrinth is impossible to explain without an engineering doctorate, and that's why the car costs $41,000. That, and because GM would really like to recoup some of the money spent from four hard years of labor.

A $350-per-month lease is a sweet deal for three years (nearly matching the Nissan Leaf), but you could straight-up buy two Chevy Cruze sedans for the price of a Volt. A $7,500 tax credit helps, but most budget-conscious shoppers will take a well-equipped 40-mpg compact — like the Cruze, Ford Focus, or Hyundai Elantra — without swallowing the Volt's BMW-like price. Right now, the Volt's a nice second car for its owner's 335i.

As expected, the Volt's premium price buys exclusive technology rather than an exquisite interior. The touch-sensitive center stack is clever, but the materials aren't even worthy of a $30,000 car: Try a bone-hard dashboard and door surfaces, coarse cloth, and a steering wheel so rough it feels wrapped in 50-grit sandpaper. Leather trim fixes some of this, but Chevy figures you'll be too fixated on the Volt's dual LCDs to notice. Because they're not simply high-resolution screens with slick animations — they're hypnotic.

First, it's alarming to see the gas gauge greyed out. It's shoved off to the screen's corner during electric mode, and the fuel level doesn't budge. Even wilder is gazing at the pie chart separating the car's mileage on gasoline and electricity. After a nine-mile commute to the Globe, I took the Volt out to lunch in the financial district, back to the office, to the gym, and then home. My pie was mostly green (29 electric miles) and a tad blue (10 miles on gas). Total average: a mesmerizing 90.8 mpg.

How obsessed can you become? As I played with the Volt's three drive settings, I flipped to "mountain" mode. The gas engine awoke — it's there so Vermonters get extra juice on hill climbs — and wouldn't shut off, even when I switched back to "normal." I refused to drive like this on a charged battery, so I swerved to the shoulder and restarted. A perfectly good pie, ruined with 0.2 gallons of gas.

Ever tried reading the messy bar graph readouts in a Prius, or pay attention to the jumpy throttle meter in a Ford Fusion Hybrid? With the Volt, there's no need to "hypermile" to keep the engine off, since it's always electric for 25 to 50 miles (and the battery life indicator throws out the most accurate estimates I've seen in an electric car).

Colder days pushed my EV range to 25 miles per day, and slightly warmer temperatures let the battery eke out 33 miles. During our video shoot all over Cambridge and Boston, I hit 40 with a few brief charges in between. At my non-SAE compliant home charging station, I paid less than two bucks a night to refuel the car.
Cheap electricity — and the security of the gas engine — takes the scrooge out of driving sensibly. In "sport" mode, the Volt provides zippy acceleration. It's no Tesla Roadster, yet it's no slouch, with 60 mph arriving in about 8.5 seconds. Because of the car's low center of gravity, the handling is equally entertaining, and there's good traction from the low-rolling resistance tires. Ground clearance is a little too low, thanks to a wide rubber chin spoiler designed to reduce drag. And all this rubber piece does is drag, on everything. Not even the Porsche 911 Turbo scrapes driveways like a Volt.

The Volt is also sportier than the photos suggest. Glossy black trim on the sides, roof, and glass hatch mask the stubby overhangs. LED lighting, a bright solid grill, and chiseled wheels keep the Volt out of the appliance aisle.

2011-Chevrolet-Volt-iphone-app.jpgAn OnStar smartphone app can monitor the Volt's battery status, set up a charging schedule, start the climate control, and send text messages when the battery's full. Since the app runs through OnStar satellites, it takes an agonizing minute or more to refresh the screen. The Leaf's app uses cellular networks and talks to the car much faster. Either way, this is convenient technology every automaker should offer.

Charging a Volt takes 10 hours on 120 volts, or about four on 240 volts (which requires a special home unit sold by Chevrolet). But when the all-electric range evaporates, the Volt is a rather disappointing hybrid. The issue is neither the engine running at disproportionately higher revs than the car's acceleration, nor the mild noise after driving in complete silence. It's the fuel economy — EPA rated at 35 city, 40 highway — which is hardly better than the Cruze. (Compared to the svelte Prius, the Volt is saddled with a couple of NFL linemen, and the aero tweaks don’t make it sleeker.)

But in a world without public charging stations, the Volt's versatility is its very best trait. For daily drivers, pure electric vehicles demand a careful exercise in arithmetic and route planning. They tend to compound the stress of driving. And while most of us follow routine, we also fall on impulse, chance, and urgency on the road.
The Volt takes care of that. Too bad you can't buy one — yet.

GM Issues Recall for 2011 U.S.-spec Chevrolet Cruze Models

After the initial 2,100 inspections triggered by a detached steering wheel, General Motors announced a new recall involving 154,112 units of the 2011 model year Cruze - pretty much all models built for North America since production started in summer 2010.

The reason for this action is related to a steering issue as well, with GM saying it wants to check that the steering shaft was properly installed. The company didn't say whether or not the two recalls are related, but added it will use the latest one action to check on another issue that might affect some 120,000 models with automatic transmission. In this case, GM wants to verify whether the transmission shift linkage was properly installed.

Pontiac GTO Judge Resurrected…Sort Of: Tuner Prepped Model Based on the Camaro

The makers of the fire-breathing Phoenix T/A that we saw at the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas are back with yet another proposal for a Pontiac model based on the latest iteration of Chevy’s Camaro pony car. This time the people over at Trans Am Depot will give birth to a modern day interpretation of Pontiac’s famed 1969 GTO Judge. The tuner named its creation “The GT9 Goat”.

The teaser renderings and photos of the faux-Pontiac reveal a bespoke front end with a split grille and a revised hood with air scoops, while at the back we find new tail lamp and bumper designs as well as a restyled trunk sporting a prominent wing. The characteristic profile side stripes, quad tail pipes and the newly styled alloy wheel options round off the exterior changes. There’s no word yet if there will be any kind of upgrades to the interior and the mechanical hardware of the Camaro.

Chevy Cruze a Worldwide Hit

General Motors unleashed the Chevrolet Cruze upon the world during October 2010, as a direct challenge to Toyota’s Corolla and other small offerings of rival companies. It would seem now that the timing simply could not have been better, with U.S gas price soaring by up to 50%
since the car first hit the country’s dealerships. As such, sales of the Chevy Cruze have reached 600,000 worldwide, equating to one of the most successful cars to be launched in several years.
The Chevy Cruz is GM’s very best example of their strategy geared toward building high quality small cars, which is a market the corporation previously left to the Japanese. Although SUVs and trucks still account for much of Gm’s overall profit, predictions regarding continuing fuel-cost increases also see further numbers of consumers being driven toward small, economical vehicles. GM have already announced their intention to further their arsenal, with the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and compact Buick to be launched later this year.
Such a strategy is already showing hugely positive signs of payoff, with GM reporting their best overall profit in more than ten years this Thursday. With fuel process creeping ever closer toward the $4 per gallon mark during the first quarter of 2011, the Chevy Cruze and other crossover vehicles such as the Equinox helped the company earn around $3.2 billion. By comparison, GM lost upwards of $4.4 billion during the summer of 2008, when US gas prices surpassed the $4 mark and the company’s selection of fuel-economic vehicles was rather thin on the ground.

GM’s Chevrolet Sail setting sail for Indian shores

GM are planning to export the Chinese designed and made Chevrolet Sail to India in the next few months making it one of the first Chinese cars to be imported into India.

In late 2009 Shanghai-GM set up a company in India with two factories, located in Halol and Talegaon, these two factories have a combined production capacity of 225,000 vehicles, and an engine building capacity of 160,000 units. By 2012 Shanghai-GM hope to have 5 models in production in the Indian market, 3 models are expected to be light business use models (highly likely to be Wuling vans) whilst the remaining two will be passenger vehicles, one of which is confirmed as the Chevrolet Spark. Wuling, who are in control of the Baojun brand, expressed that they wish to get ahead in the Chinese market with the Baojun brand before jumping elsewhere.
Wuling’s vans are under going testing in India at the moment and are likely to undergo CKD production in India in the near future.

Corvette Assembly Plant Getting a Face Lift!

GM is expected to announce later today that they are going to invest $100M in their Bowling Green assembly plant to make way for the next generation of its iconic sports car, the Corvette.

Mark Reuss will give details at a planned conference about the changes that are expected to be made.  This is all for the new C7 Corvette that will be released.  Chevrolet also recently announced some of the many changes for their 2012 model corvette which is expected to put them on par with the competition.

Check back to see what the details look like.

2011 Chevy Volt Revisited: Now "Green Car of the Year"

Personally, I think there are many potential electric car buyers out there who are more put off by the Chevrolet name than anything else. The fact that the Volt is a solid buy for the money and it is more than a hybrid, seem to be missed by many buyers. So, the Volt's designation as the
“Green Car of the Year” at the closing ceremonies of the New York Auto Show may just be the boost the Volt needs.

The Volt is a surprisingly good domestic model, although it does tend to feature the US auto industry's fascination with plastic, plastic and more plastic, it's something you can easily learn to live with – our family Chevy sedan is all-plastic and bright-work and we don't even notice it – and so the Volt has been a vastly overlooked vehicle by many buyers who consider it little more than a hybrid and a domestic, to boot. (I still haven't had a chance to do a topnotch review of the Volt just yet so one will be coming along soon. I have had a chance to look at their market-leading technology and I can say that the Volt is a good piece of work!)

Maybe it's the $30,000-plus price-tag is a turn-off for many potential buyers. Normally, if you were to tell a buyer that he or she could run a car today for an investment of as little as $1.50 per day, they would be champing at the bit waiting to sign up. However, when you wave the $30,000 price-tag under their collective noses the mood begins to turn away from the expensive option to lower-priced options.

This could be turning, though, because even at this price, though, with gasoline prices climbing, it seems, almost hourly, there's hope that the Volt could get the kind of attention it deserves. Until this NYC Show award and its being named “Car of the Year” by Motor Trend, sales of the Volt were very slow.

Perhaps the real sticking point for many buyers is the second one mentioned earlier. They believe it is little more than a hybrid like the Prius or Honda Insight, when it is so much more. The Prius and Insight are parallel hybrids meaning they are sometimes all-electrics, but most of the time are more gas-powered than electric. The Volt, on the other hand, is a series electric, meaning that the 1.4-liter engine that's used in the Volt has only one purpose, keeping the battery charged.

The Volt, which normally charges overnight at home when the electrical grid is little-used, has a 40-mile all-electric range. Chevy's research has shown that most drivers use their cars 40 miles a day or less and so they would be running under electric mode at all times. If you exceed the 40-mile mark, the 1.4-liter engine comes on to recharge the batteries and that's it. When it has finished its chore, it shuts down and you're on electric again. This gives the Volt a total 415-mile range and if you don't exceed the 40-mile mark, you really never have to fill the tank, either.

Admittedly, the pipeline has been slow to fill with Volts because they've wanted to take their time and do things right. They have done that and now they have to wait for the market to provide its rewards.

If speculators have their way and gas hits $5-a-gallon, you'll see that the patience of Nissan and Volt will have been rewarded and so will those who are still sitting on waiting lists waiting for their Volts (or Leafs) to appear.

Sport Truck Redux: New Rumors About the Holden Ute Heading to the U.S.A.

It’s a poorly kept secret that many Americans are quite fond of the Australian-made and Commodore-derived, Holden Ute, which we recently drove in Queensland. It’s big, brutish and comfortable with a bevy of engine and equipment options to suit virtually any budget or taste - so long as those tastes only extend to, “Big, brutish V6 or V8 engined utes”.

Before the Global Financial Crisis of 2009, the subsequent bankruptcy GM and the disillusion of the Pontiac brand, as many as half of the Holden Commodores built in Australia were destined for the U.S. and the world in the form of the Pontiac G8. A thinly disguised Holden Ute even made a showing at the 2008 New York Auto Show as the Pontiac G8 Sport Truck.

2012 Chevrolet Corvette

Chevrolet has released full information about the staggering 2012 Corvette Centennial Edition.
“We constantly strive to make the Corvette a better car on the road and the track,” commented Tadge Juechter, Corvette vehicle line director and chief engineer.
“For 2012, the Corvette lineup achieves its highest performance, while at the same time being easier to drive and enjoy thanks to several changes and new features inside the car.”, Tadge Juechter added.
The manufacturer can fit the new 2012 Vette with optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires available for the most powerful models – the lightweight, 505PS (377 kW) Z06 and the maximum-performance, 638PS (476 kW) supercharged ZR1. The vehicles also have Performance Traction Management (PTM) technology, which delivers an 8-percent gain in maximum lateral acceleration, to more than 1.1G.

The tires are included in the optional Z07 performance package on the Corvette Z06 and a new PDE performance package on the ZR1. The dimensions are 285/30 ZR19 at the front and 335/25 ZR20 at the rear. They are fitted to the all-new aluminum Cup-style wheels in satin black or machined finishes.
Another interesting feature for improved aerodynamics is the full-width racing-style spoiler, which also come with the 2012 Z07 and PDE packages. The Z06 model will now offer Magnetic Selective Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension technology. The Brembo carbon ceramic brakes will be a part of the Z07 chassis package and standard on ZR1. Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires remain standard on the ZR1.
Finally, a carbon fiber hood will be an available option on 2012 Z06 models.
Inside, all 2012 Vettes will come with a new seat design and a new steering wheel. Microfiber suede seat inserts are optional and improve tactile feel, as well as add additional support.
The audio system is from Bose and includes 9 speakers. A new Technology Package (2LT trim level) brings together many of the Corvette’s popular infotainment features and makes them available for more models. The package’s equipment includes the navigation radio, head-up display, Bose premium audio system, Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity and a USB port.
With all new features, the customers will be able to create a unique 2012 Corvette, which will bring them a lot of joy both on public roads as well as the race tracks.

GM to Build and Sell New 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in Korea

General Motors is quite serious about selling its upcoming 2013 Chevrolet Malibu on a global scale. So serious, in fact, that the Detroit automaker is making plans to built the mid-size model on several continents. Today, GM revealed that will build and sell the redesigned Malibu sedan in Korea. We’ll remind you that earlier this year, GM Korea announced it is replacing the Daewoo nameplate with the Chevrolet brand for the local market.
Surprisingly, the first country to get the new Malibu won’t be the States, but South Korea with production set to begin in Bupyeong, Korea this fall, followed by Jingjiao, China, at the end of 2011 and then Fairfax, Kansas and Detroit-Hamtramck, in the U.S., in early 2012.
“Adding Korea as a key sales market for the new Malibu further increases the brand’s global presence and continues our growth path while increasing our car offerings to consumers in Korea,” said Russ Clark, Chevrolet Product Director.
GM also said that there’s growing interest for the Malibu in Korea, despite the fact that the midsize sedan has never been officially sold in the country. The Detroit automaker said that members of Malibu-related Internet clubs total about 30,000 in South Korea, despite the fact that the midsize sedan has never been officially sold in the country. However, this shouldn’t come as a surprise for those with some knowledge of the local car culture as there are myriads of dedicated online clubs for all models.
The new Malibu received its world premiere at the New York and Shanghai auto shows last week. It will be sold in nearly 100 markets on six continents, with each region getting specific engine choices. Up until now, we know that North America will get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 190HP+ and a 2.4-liter ECO unit with the eAssist system delivering 180HP, while China will receive 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter naturally aspirated fours, and a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine.
In addition to the gasoline range, the European market version of the Malibu is expected to be offered with several diesel options as well.
